SAC Soccer opens the season 1-1 south of the border
The First Soccer spent the weekend in Buffalo and returned home with a 1-1 record to begin the season in non-league action.
On Saturday, the Saints took 20 minutes to settle into the match at Nichols School, before finding a series of dangerous spells of possession in the attacking half. SAC finally got their breakthrough just before halftime, with left back Sebastian Madeiros ’25 finding Matvey Semochkin ‘25 in behind the Nichols defence. Semochkin still had some work to do to settle the ball and chip it home for the game’s only goal.
SAC ran into even tougher competition on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, and went into the break, down 1-0. The start of the second stanza saw the Saints start to take control of the midfield through the likes of Nathan Chin ’23, Issa Abdu ’24, and Oliver Poulos ’25 (pictured).
It was Poulos’ work in the St. Joe’s box that earned SAC a penalty, which Quintin Roy ’23 stepped up and buried on the rebound. However, the draw was short-lived, with a 50-50 challenge just 60 seconds later giving the Marauders a penalty and the 2-1 victory.
A mixed start to the 2022 season for the First Soccer team, with plenty of lessons learned for what’s ahead.
