Welcome to St. Andrew's College. It gives me great pleasure, as Head of School, to introduce you to all this great school has to offer. As you explore these pages, I sincerely hope that you will be enticed to contact us and, when possible, pay us a visit.
At St. Andrew's, we pride ourselves on our outstanding teachers, first-rate facilities, beautiful grounds, and programs that prepare students to go out in the world and make a difference.
As you will discover, St. Andrew's is not an ordinary place. We nurture and develop creative students who perform above and beyond conventional standards. As a boarding school comprised of 258 students from 25-plus countries and approximately 400 day students, we form an international community of Andreans that flourishes in its diversity. This brotherhood believes in and supports one another in a community that believes in and supports them.
Our curriculum is designed to encourage students to become the best they can be academically, artistically, and athletically. Robust academic programming is guided by four areas of focus: boy-friendly instructional strategies, collaboration and teamwork, the development of critical-thinking skills, and the promotion of a growth mindset. Academics are balanced with a broad variety of co-curricular activities, leadership opportunities, educational trips, and weekend programs.
A student who arrives on campus in Grade 5 can't even begin to envision his inner potential, but he will certainly discover it during his time here. He could never imagine that he might be capable of scoring the winning try in a rugby game, performing on stage in a play, and leading the Pipes & Drums – all within a 24-hour period. And yet we have seen our students achieve the unimaginable, time and time again.
St. Andrew's facilities are second to none. The Not An Ordinary Place Campaign ran for eight years and added $42 million in improvements to our facilities. It was the most successful and ambitious campaign in the school's history. The three phases included: 1) the Yuill Family Athletic Complex with an all-weather synthetic turf field, baseball diamond, and outdoor, six-lane rubber track; 2) the La Brier Family Arena, which houses an NHL-sized ice surface and 6,000-square-foot weight-training facility; renovated kitchen and servery in Cole Hall; the Wirth Theatre, complete with a thrust stage; and 3) the Centre for Leadership, Innovation & Performance, which focuses on music, business, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Adding to this in 2021 is our renovated McLaughlin Hall, with state-of-the-art science, technology, and engineering facilities, and a two-storey Makerspace.
St. Andrew's has been educating young men since 1899, and true to our mission statement, we are "dedicated to developing the complete man, the well-rounded citizen." In an increasingly diverse and interconnected world, where traditional masculine ideology is being redefined, I'm pleased to announce our unique and revolutionary partnership with our newly minted partner school, St. Anne's School for girls. Starting in September 2022, students will traverse both campuses, participating in each other's clubs, arts, and social activities, gaining cultural literacy, elasticity of outlook, and making lifelong friendships along the way.
St. Anne's and St. Andrew's are distinct schools with unique missions. St. Andrew's is south of St. John's Sideraod while St. Anne's is to the north. Our partnership will inspire new perspectives, giving students from both campuses the best of both worlds.
My wife, Karan, and I feel fortunate to be raising our family in such an extraordinary setting. It's the place where both of our sons are graduates, where teachers and staff truly care about the students, where alumni stop by to visit their old home and rekindle memories, and where parents are always welcome.
