Mathematics

Grade 5

This course is part of our accelerated mathematics program in the Middle School. The course is based upon the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Curriculum - Grade 5 Mathematics. As such, the following five strands are studied: number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, along with probability and data management. As an accelerated program, students will be introduced to several Grade 6 concepts. The course uses a variety of teaching strategies to develop students’ numeracy. Spirit of Math drills are used to develop students’ mathematical operational skills, while the use of web-based mathematics programs is part of the coursework. Students will be required to use binders and a textbook as the primary tools for in-class work and homework. Students’ homework will be accompanied by a student workbook and journal. A number of culminating performance tasks that reflect real-life mathematics applications complete the learning for these students.

Grade 6

This course is part of our accelerated mathematics program in the Middle School. The course is based upon the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Curriculum - Grade 6 Mathematics. As such, the five strands of number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, along with probability and data management are covered. As an accelerated program, students will be introduced to several Grade 7 concepts during each unit of study. The course uses a variety of teaching strategies to develop student numeracy skills. Spirit of Math drills are used to develop students’ mathematical operational skills, while the use of web-based mathematics programs is an integral part of the coursework. Students will be required to use their school laptops and textbooks as primary tools for in-class work and homework. In addition to traditional written assessments, this course uses project-based learning as a way for students to apply their skills and strategies in an authentic and meaningful manner.

Grade 7

This course continues our accelerated mathematics program in the Middle School and is based primarily upon the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Curriculum - Grade 8 Mathematics, with some expectations from the Grade 7 curriculum covered to ease the acquisition of the more challenging concepts. The five strands covered are number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, as well as probability and data management. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ numeracy and problem-solving skills, especially those applicable to real-life situations. Student learning will be supplemented with the use of technology, including working with documents and completing practice exercises online.

Grade 8

In advance of the Grade 8 year of our Middle School mathematics program, abilities are assessed, and each student is placed into one of two streams: Students who exhibit the ability to learn and apply advanced math concepts are placed into the reach-ahead stream where they will complete the Grade 9 academic course, MPM1D, as laid out in the Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10 Mathematics. Students who present as being more comfortable learning math at grade level will be placed in the Grade 8 math stream where they will cover the relevant expectations included in the Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8 Mathematics. The Grade 9 course is divided into four strands: number sense and algebra, linear relations, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry. The Grade 8 course is divided into five strands: number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, as well as probability and data management. To support students in the accelerated program, especially those who enter it in Grade 8, skills are strengthened with supplementary activities, such as online practice exercises.
